Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 110 D ZG.1 Combat Loss Relic Display by Ron Cole - with original hand-painted nose art of ZG.1's black/white/yellow/red 'Wespe' hornet
This Messerschmitt Bf 110 D (Werksnummer 4282 - Code S9+EM) operated with Zerstörergeschwader 1 (ZG.1), from the invasion of Poland, through the Battle of Britain, and into Operation Barbarossa - the invasion of the Soviet Union. On September 1st, 1942, during operations around Stalingrad, this aircraft was brought down north of the city by ground fire. In 2020, sections of this aircraft were recovered from the site and acquired by Cole’s Aircraft.
A preserved aluminum piece from this historic aircraft is preserved on this display, with almost all of its near perfectly preserved gray/green camouflage paint - and extremely rare hand-painted remains of this aircraft's unique nose art 'Wespe'!
Display size: 24x18-inches
This piece in one of a short series of five - each displaying a roughly 5x4-inch aluminum section of skin with mostly black and white brush-painted (by the Luftwaffe crew in WW2, not by me) 'Wespe' nose art over the original gray/green camouflage paint. Each piece is different, but care has been taken to ensure that each piece is comparable in terms of the nose art remains and size.
Accompanying photos depict evidence of this aircraft's identification and history, the larger piece of wreckage from which these pieces were cut, and period photos of this specific aircraft. Note that this aircraft, in the 3rd picture, was whitewashed for winter operations in Russia. That was a temporary scheme that was typically removed in the spring, and no evidence of it remains on these parts.
