The Douglas SBD Dauntless was one of the most important assets in the arsenal of the U.S. Navy during the War in the Pacific, even though it was slow and of a pre-war design. The type was absolutely decisive at the Battle of Midway, as a dive bomber.
Few SBDs were spared from the post-war scrap drives, as the type had limited use in peacetime, and a mere 18 survive, of all variants, in various states of preservation.
Parts of this aircraft's horizontal stabilizer were revolvered from Espiritu Santo in 1980, among parts from other U.S. Navy aircraft, including two F6F Hellcats and a Wildcat, all from the U.S.S. Saratoga. Parts from the stab itself are Navy blue over aluminum, and parts from the fuselage fillet show blue over pre-war yellow, and a dusting of olive drab and zinc chromate on the reverse.
