This A6M3 ‘Zero’, serial number 3600, was built by Mitsubishi in March 1943. It was ultimately assigned to Tobera, in Papua New Guinea, near the Japanese Naval bastion of Rabaul. The wreckage of this aircraft was discovered near Ilugi Creek - south of Rabaul - by Brian Bennett in the 1980s. While it was substantially destroyed by a high impact crash, the tail section remained relatively intact. These 3.25 x 2.5 inch duraluminum parts were from the internal structure on the vertical fin. Some Aotake blue-green paint is in evidence.
