Very rare and special one-of-a-kind 24 x 48-inch open-framed canvas relic display, with large upper-wing 'star and bar' insignia from this very early F6F-3 Hellcat. This panel includes the well-preserved c. 1943, short lived, red surround insignia, which is seldom ever encountered in pieces such as this. Very special!
Built in mid-1943, this Grumman F6F-3 (08974) served in combat against the Japanese Empire in the South Pacific. Assigned to Fighter Group 40 (VF-40), this aircraft operated from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal and supported Allied operations in the New Georgia Campaign, and later, from Espiritu Santo during the Borneo Campaign. Rescued in 1980, these parts of 08974 finally returned to the United States in 2019.
